The spread of STDs in women and men isn’t slowing down. The U.S. CDC reports that rates of infection are particularly high in men and women aged 15-29, making the need to recognize common STDs symptoms all the more urgent. Though each sexually transmitted disease comes with its own side effects, there are certain common STDs symptoms that apply to multiple prevalent infections.
Vaginal Discharge
Though vaginal discharge is an ordinary biological occurrence among many women, it’s also one of the most common STDs symptoms in females when it occurs abnormally. Unusual vaginal discharge can be a sign of Chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomoniasis. Benign vaginal discharge that is generally clear and mostly “liquid.” But as one of the most common STDs symptoms in women, vaginal discharge will often appear thick, discolored, and possibly foul smelling.
Penile Discharge
Though the symptoms of STDs in men are not always as pronounced as they are in women, one of the most common STDs symptoms among males is an abnormal penile discharge. Genital discharge in men can signify the presence of gonorrhea or Chlamydia, the most widespread STD in the country.
Painful Urination
Painful urination also ranks among the most common STDs symptoms in men and women. Often, a burning sensation upon urination will be accompanied by the presence of blood in the urine and is a known side effect of Chlamydia and gonorrhea in particular.
Less Common STDs Symptoms
In some cases, STDs will produce side effects that mimic those of the common cold or flu. Body aches, fever, and fatigue will sometimes present following herpes or HIV infection, but these symptoms of STDs in women and men are not as common as the aforementioned.
Treating Common STDs Symptoms
Common STDs symptoms such as genital discharge and painful urination can be treated via prescription antibiotics. When caused by Chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomoniasis, these common STDs symptoms will often disappear completely within 7 to 10 days. Other common STDs symptoms such as genital sores may take longer to address, particularly if they appear in conjunction with the herpes virus, but medication is available to minimize the effects of such outbreaks. Regardless of the underlying cause, the success of alleviating common STDs symptoms hinges upon proper diagnosis, making STD testing kits and STD testing an essential initial component to addressing and treating side effects.
